What Is Hot Forging?

Hot forging is performed by heating a metal billet (commonly steel, aluminum, titanium, or alloy) to above its recrystallization point (for steel, around 950–1250 °C). Under this condition, the material becomes ductile and can be shaped into intricate forms using hydraulic or mechanical presses equipped with specialized dies . The softened metal flows more easily, reducing the force required and refining its internal grain structure.
After forging, parts may undergo trimming, heat treatment, and machining to meet exact dimensional requirements.
